The historical significance of a tree and a small roadside piece of land near Hereford is investigated, in an attempt to throw light on Hereford before and after the Norman incursion. It is suggested that the tree marks a piece of land set aside for public assemblies, possibly as early as the twelfth century, or even pre-Conquest. Au/PP-B

Chapel Farm, Deerfold, Herefordshire: a re-appraisal; part 1
Duncan James
73 - 98
A detailed comparison of the architectural features of the farm with some other well-known buildings leads to some conclusions about their provenance. It is suggested that the farm is the remains of a late medieval timber-framed chapel, built between 1430-40 by the same group of craftsmen as three other buildings: Bryndraenog (Beguildy, Radnorshire), Swan House (Pembrige, Herefordshire) and No. 5 Harley Court (Hereford), financed by Richard, Duke of York. There is also a suggested interpretation of a barn within the curtilage of Chapel Farm and a discussion of the possible origins of the choir stalls and an altar slab in Wigmore church.
