Abstract
1992 excavations at Minera
Bill Slater
2 - 3
Reports discoveries from the Minera lead mines at Wrexham. These include a pair of ore bins and associated dressing floors from the late-eighteenth to early-nineteenth centuries, the foundations of a nineteenth century steam powered horizontal winding engine and its boiler house. Organic remains survived in adjacent pits, possibly due to the accumulation of lubrication grease. Three forms of winding rope were preserved, along with the foundations of two tubular boilers.
All roads lead to Rome
2
Reports the discovery of a heavily metalled Roman road during ploughing near a Roman settlement site at Oakenholt.
A date for yew
3
Heartwood from a large yew tree in the churchyard has been radiocarbon dated, suggesting that the tree is at least four hundred years old.
Gunning for Victory
3
Identifies the Bersham Ironworks as a specialist ironcasting factory which made some of the guns for Nelson's Victory.
Treasure hunting: a cause for concern
4
Reports that treasure hunters have damaged a previously intact Bronze Age barrow within Moel y Gaer hillfort. Other incidents are reported from Roman and medieval sites and it is suggested that metal-detecting activity has increased following recent East Anglian finds. Advises on action to be taken if treasure hunting is observed on a site.
