Abstract
The Field Archaeology Unit
1
Revised summary of the unit's work introduces the new contracting arm, South Eastern Archaeological Services. The type of work undertaken by the latter is covered in more detail under the heading `New SEAS'.
Bronze Age Brighton
1
Reports on the excavation of a Late Bronze Age settlement, comprising at least four circular huts, on the site of the University of Brighton's new halls of residence, Coldean Lane. Similarities with other sites in the vicinity are apparent (see 94/1324 & 94/1344). A resistivity survey is being undertaken.
Lewes friary reconstructed
2
Summarises the interpretation of the layout of the friary, following post-excavation analysis of the results of the 1988--89 excavations. Part of the church, and the ranges to south and east of the cloister, have been identified. Also records the discovery of a pair of bronze taps from the lavatorium.
New Romney and St Mary's Bay & Dymchurch bypasses
2
Reports that archaeological evaluation of surface concentrations of pottery has revealed areas of medieval activity on Romney Marsh. Further evaluation of deposits buried by marine sediments is required.
Secrets of the sea
2
A three-month project examining existing records has identified over one thousand sites along the East Sussex coast. Some of these, which include dredger finds and wreck sites, are noted. Unlocated wrecks known from documentary sources were also investigated. A medieval graffito of a ship from Broomhill church is illustrated.
St Mary's Church, Walberton
3
An important collection of late Saxon pottery found in the present graveyard is cited as evidence for early medieval occupation of the site. Roman and prehistoric material was also found.
Ten years of destruction
3
The findings of a recent survey of historic farm buildings in eastern Sussex are compared with those of an earlier survey (Historic Buildings in Eastern Sussex, 3): an alarming level of destruction is highlighted.
Topographical Survey
3
Notes the objectives of the recent survey, and reports evidence for a prehistoric site overlooking Romney Marsh.
Top architect commissioned to build a barn?
3
Observes that although the barn at Groombridge Place, Kent, is apparently constructed with late eighteenth-century techniques, it may have been built in the late seventeenth century to a very advanced design by the architect of the similarly inovative house at Groombridge.
Early roof at Up Marden church
3
Notes that a survey of the timbers of the chancel roof has confirmed a thirteenth-century date.
The ABC of medieval archaeology
4
Discusses a slate fragment inscribed with a twelfth-century alphabet and the Lord's Prayer. No parallels have been identified, and it is thought that the slate was used for teaching purposes.
The Essex Redoubt
4
Summarises the findings and briefly describes the methods used in this archaeological assessment of a 200ha site near Ongar.
Cult of the pig? Part 2
4
A watching brief on a pipeline between Findon and Washington has revealed a previously unrecorded farmstead. Finds included a small hoard of second century silver coins and a bronze statuette of a boar. The latter is possibly linked with a local pig cult (see also 94/1475).
New discoveries at Beddingham villa
4
Reports on the 1992 season. Work on the main precinct concentrated on the bath-suite and the south range, where an Early Roman or Iron Age roundhouse was found. Further examination at the periphery of the complex identified a small shrine of uncertain function. Resistivity survey was also carried out.
