Abstract
Baby burials at Beddingham
1
An update of 1991 excavations, noting discovery of five new-born infant burials beneath the villa. This is followed by a brief discussion of the significance of the jawbone of a `Black rat at villa'- the first of its kind in a rural context.
Treading in Lysons' footsteps
1
Notes that the south corridor, porticus, ambulatory, and courtyard at Bignor villa are being re-excavated. The project's educational role is also mentioned.
A lost world
2
More evidence of the buried prehistoric landscape has emerged, in the form of a lake at the foot of a chalk cliff. Faunal evidence and associated biface assemblage are also noted (see also 94/1253).
The quest for a lost town
2
Notes preliminary results of fieldwalking around the hamlet of Old Romney, which was aimed at testing historical evidence for the site of the former port and mint site.
Neolithic snails from Brighton
3
A note describing part of the Neolithic ditch, which was subject of a rescue excavation. It is also noted that molluscan evidence was recovered and that there are plans to preserve the remaining part of the monument.
Cult of the pig?
3
Notes that re-examination of a `kite-shaped structure', identified in 1909, has revealed it to be a polygonal temple. Large quantities of pig bones are interpreted as evidence of a local pig cult (see also 94/1426).
An Elizabethan mansion discovered
4
Summarises the structural sequence of the ruined sixteenth- or early seventeenth-century house at Ore Place, Hastings. The formerly held belief that the remains were those of a medieval manor house is, thus, refuted.
Æscwulf's gold ring
4
A short description and discussion of a gold ring inscribed with the owner's name, which was excavated from a rubbish pit at Steyning in Sussex.
Landlord unearthed
4
Notes the discovery of a stoneware ale mugs inscised with the name of Thomas Ford, landlord of the King and Queen Inn in 1715, during excavations at Old Fair Place, Lewes.
