Abstract:
An examination of the function of the prehistoric linear ditches of the Wessex chalklands. A preface entitled `Conservation issues in the Salisbury Plain' by Dai Morgan Evans (1--2) sets the scene by discussing the managment of the area. The project is then introduced in part one with a summary of previous work and discussion of the research strategy. `The background to the enquiry' (3--16), and `The selection of a study area (17--25) are both by Richard Bradley, and `The development and application of the field methodology' is by Roy Entwistle (26--68). Part two comprises the following specialist studies: `The pottery' by Frances Raymond (69--90); `The analysis of five flint assemblages from the Upper Study Area' by Ross Whitehead (91--100); `The environmental setting of the linear ditches system' by Roy Entwistle (101--21); `Charcoal identification' by Rowena Gale (119); `Carbonised cereal remains' by Wendy Carruthers (119); and `Settlements, territories and "Celtic" fields: the changing role of boundary earthworks' by Roy Entwistle (122--36). The concluding part is `Discussion and conclusions' by Richard Bradley, Roy Entwistle & Frances Raymond (137--52) -- a review of some of the issues raised by previous studies of linear ditches. Certain observations such as the topographic setting, the relationship of the ditches to `Celtic' fields, and the idea of LBA cattle ranches are examined, and the interpretation of the ditches is reconsidered from a more theoretical perspective. There are four appendices: `Gazetteer of project sites' (153), `Pottery methodology and data' (154--6), `Flint data' (157--62) and `Sub-fossil mollusca from excavation sites' (163--9).
