Abstract:		 Provides an introduction to the Portland Basin, its canal warehouse and the canals of Tameside. Notes that the warehouse, which was built in 1834 and has a number of unusual design features, is now a museum of social and industrial history. Discusses the origins and development of the warehouse, and considers the site within the context of other canal infrastructure in the region. Also features a gazetteer of the surviving canal warehouses of North West England.
