Abstract
Fenland Management Project report 1. Little Duke Farm, Deeping St. Nicholas, Lincs: plant macrofossils and molluscs from a Bronze Age barrow and pre-barrow contexts
Most plant macrofossils and insects had been degraded by recent de-watering of the secondary mound ditch. Charred plant remains and molluscs suggest a sequence of: deposition of a diffuse scatter of plant material -- cereals, weeds, nuts & fruits -- during pre-monument settlement activity, possibly Late Neolithic; clearance of secondary woodland, Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age; incorporation of possibly domestic refuse material into barrow mounds during the Bronze Age; and charred plant remains and partly burnt molluscs from Bronze Age cremations indicating proximity of grassland and trampled ground. Fuel collection in the calcareous fen woods is indicated and three oysters had been placed in a cist cremation.
