Abstract
Leicester, The Shires 1988 excavations: further identifications of small mammal and bird bones
Fowl, geese and duck were kept within the town and would have provided eggs, feathers for stuffing and quill feathers for pens and arrows. The relative importance of these non-skeletal products to the meat provided cannot be ascertained from the bone assemblage. Debris from a festive meal, and waste of specialised craftsmen are suggested in two contexts. Small scale winter wildfowling is indicated, adding variety to the diet but not a reliable food source. The sporting aspect may have been more important. A range of carrion eaters were also present, some of which may have had their wing feathers utilised.
