Abstract: |
This collection of animal bones was much smaller than the contemporary group studied from Little Lane. The assemblage appears to be household refuse with cattle and sheep/goat fragments occurring in similar proportions besides pig, fallow deer and bird bones. Of interest is the higher proportion of mandibles from extremely young calves compared to the post-cranial elements which are predominantly from older animals. This suggests selective deposition of certain skeletal elements and a growth in dairy farming/veal production, perhaps within the town itself. The presence of infant piglet bones may indicate that pigs were urban animals. The age structure of the sheep/goat differs from the cattle and pig with an absence of bones from very young animals. This may suggest that lambs were not born within the town, unlike calves and piglets. The majority of the sheep were killed in excess of two years old suggesting that wool and mutton were the main products of the flock. Au |
