Abstract:
The objective of the dendrochronological analysis at St Andrew's Church, Owston, Leicestershire, was to date part of the nave roof in order to influence a forthcoming programme of repairs. >From the eight samples taken, two site chronologies were formed. The first chronology, consisting of five samples, has 113 rings and spans the period AD 1287 to 1399. The relative positions of the heartwood/sapwood boundaries on the samples in this chronology give the timbers represented an estimated felling date in the range AD 1412 to 1437. The second site chronology, consisting of two samples, has 127 rings and spans the period AD 1485 to 1611. The relative positions of the heartwood/sapwood boundaries on the samples in this chronology give the timbers represented an estimated felling date in the range AD 1626 to 1651. A single sample was dated as spanning the period AD 1298--1403. The timber represented has an estimated felling date in the range AD 1418--43.
