Abstract:
The objective of the analysis at the Archbishop's Palace at Charing was to date timbers from four parts of the building: the East Block, the Great Hall, and two parts of the Central Range. Both parts of the Central Range contained timbers which had too few rings for satisfactory analysis and these were not sampled. Analysis of eighteen samples from this site resulted in the production of three dated site chronologies and one undated site sequence. The first dated site chronology, from timbers of the East Block, has 202 rings and spans the period AD 1280 to 1481. Sapwood on one of the samples in this chronology gives an estimated felling date in the range AD 1496 to 1521. The second dated site chronology, from timbers of the Great Hall, has 83 rings and spans the period AD 1239 to 1311. Sapwood on one of the samples in this chronology gives an estimated felling date in the range AD 1326 to 1351. The third dated site chronology, from other timbers of the East Block, has 118 rings and spans the period AD 1442 to 1559. Sapwood on two samples in this chronology gives an estimated felling date in the range AD 1573 to 1598. The undated site sequence, from timbers of the Great Hall, has 92 rings.
