Abstract: |
A small group of prehistoric sherds ranging in date from the Early Neolithic to the Late Iron Age were thin sectioned and the fabrics were examined. A series of questions were posed about the likely origins and continuity of fabric from one period to the next. The most distinctive fabric contained pieces of granite and may come from a source as far away as south-west England, with the Channel Islands and Brittany also possible. The remainder of the sherds contained a more common range of inclusions that probably reflects a fairly local origin. An examination of the clay matrix in each case showed that a range of clays had been employed over time, some of which showed continuity of use. |
