Abstract: |
The trees at Abercynafon were discovered during the construction of a pond in Talybont Forest when large timbers appeared in the spoil heaps. 114 timbers from the spoil heaps and subsequent archaeological excavation were sampled for dendrochronology. A tree-ring chronology was produced for the period 3098--2730 BC. Dates were produced for twenty-five timbers; these indicated that the dated trees died in the first half of the third millennium BC. The trees probably came from a small area of primary woodland, where conditions were often very unfavourable to growth. Comparison with contemporary trees from the Isle of Wight suggests that a general climatic decline may have affected the growth of the trees. |
