Abstract: |
Twenty samples from various parts of Maison Dieu, Ospringe, were analysed by tree-ring dating. This analysis produced two site chronologies. The first, consisting of eight samples, has 89 rings but it did not cross-match with any reference chronologies. Although it is undated, the cross-matching of the samples, and the relative positions of the heartwood/sapwood boundaries on the samples within it strongly suggest that the timbers they represent are all of a single felling phase. The second site chronology, composed of four samples, has 65 rings, and is dated as spanning the period AD 1388--1452. Interpretation of the sapwood boundary on the samples in this site chronology gives an estimated felling date in the range AD 1462--82. |
