Abstract: |
This building complex represents a rare survival of an early commercial urban maltings. The seven-bay timber-framed structure investigated in this study had been dated on stylistic grounds to the period AD 1525--75. The ring-width sequences obtained in dendrochronological samples were, with one exception, less than 60 years in length, but four timbers were dated. The estimated felling dates for these timbers suggest a date of construction between AD 1557 and AD 1580, or within a few years thereafter. This greatly reduces the date range for the building assessed on stylistic grounds. |
