Abstract: |
Twenty samples from the roof of the East Lodge of Hardwick Old Hall were analysed by tree-ring dating. This analysis produced a single site chronology consisting of fourteen samples, having 92 rings spanning the period AD 1518 -- AD 1609. Interpretation of the sapwood on the samples would indicate that all the dated timbers have a felling date in the range AD 1622--47. Given that there is some documentary evidence to indicate a date by which the building was in existence (a survey map of AD 1628), it is likely that the true felling date lies towards the lower end of this range. |
