Abstract: |
The non-ferrous metalworking debris at this Roman settlement site indicates that copper alloy melting and casting was taking place. Around 2kg of crucible fragments, of at least two different types, was recovered, together with smaller amounts of mould debris and Roman pottery reused for metallurgical purposes. At least some of the casting employed investment moulds. Low-temperature copper alloy working was also carried out at the site, as shown by a small number of sheet metal offcuts and part-formed objects; particular alloy types were selected for particular artefact types. The largest amount of non-ferrous metalworking material comes from second and third century contexts. Both ironsmithing and copper alloy casting were being carried out at roughly the same time in some of the buildings at the site. About 31kg of fired or vitrified ceramic debris may be associated with the casting activities, but may also be connected with ironworking. |
