Abstract: |
Tree-ring analysis was undertaken on samples from forty-two structural timbers from two buildings forming part of the Home Farm complex at Nostell Priory, West Yorkshire. The results contribute significantly to the interpretation of the buildings. The `brewhouse', thought to be a single-phase structure, dates from early AD 1481. However the building has a series of intermediate roof trusses inserted circa AD 1536/37 which may mark a major remodelling of the structure. The `refectory', interpreted as parts of two buildings, is instead shown to be a single phase structure dating from AD 1509/10. Some inserted timbers in the `refectory' are also just pre-Dissolution in date, one at least of which is clearly re-used in its present position. Both buildings include later modifications or repairs from the mid-eighteenth century. |
