Abstract: |
Excavation in advance of gravel extraction at two almost adjacent sites at Totterdown Lane, Horcott, near Fairford, Gloucestershire, revealed a dynamic pattern of settlement and landscape organization spanning the period from the Middle Iron Age through the entire Roman period and into the early post-Roman (Saxon) era. The evidence consisted mainly of ditched land divisions for the Roman period, although there were some remains of settlement and a series of small clusters of burials (inhumations and cremations). The Middle Iron Age site was more clearly defined as a settlement focus, although it is unclear if it was two broadly contemporaneous groups of structures or a more fluid and long-lived combination of buildings. The post-Roman evidence was confined to a single ditch and one possible building, with a few other associated features. Dating for both sites is somewhat limited due to the sparse distribution, small quantity and poor preservation of the finds assemblages, but the main periods of activity can be clearly placed in a stratigraphic (relative) sequence. Significant economic and environmental evidence (finds, faunal remains and plant macrofossils) was present only in small assemblages, but these do nevertheless make a contribution to the study of these periods in this area. There is a possibility that the land under study here was at least partly dedicated to horse-rearing at one point in the Roman occupation. Specialist reports include |
