Abstract: |
[SE 858642]. Two tofts of the twenty-six identified in the village have been completely excavated over seventeen years and the historical sources studied. The layout of the village appears to have been influenced by the RB field pattern; there is some AS pottery and a sunken hut. Areas 6 and 10 were both built on from 12th century onwards. Toft bounds remained relatively stable, but the position and orientation of houses could change radically. Final desertion was in early 16th century. Economic evidence from the excavated areas indicates the crops grown and the animals used for food; a ?smithy and ?roasting hearth were examined, the cellared camera of the manor house and the house forms are reconstructed, and trading relations (local and non-local) outlined. |
