Evidence of ancient copper mining at Engine Vein, Alderley Edge, Cheshire
David Gale
266 - 273
Presents an elevation drawing of a copper mining face and discusses the role of grooved stone hammers. Three main periods of mining activity have been identified: a pitting technique, late 17th/early 18th century underhand stoping, and late 19th century blasting. Dating problems for the grooved stone hammers, and for prehistoric mining, are discussed and a Bronze Age date is offered on the basis of parallels at home and abroad. Au(abr)
