Abstract
The end of Viking-Age fortifications in Denmark, and what followed
Else Roesdahl
39 - 47
The mid-10th century saw the introduction of new fortification types - the geometric fortresses, the Danevirke, urban defences. No 11th century works are yet known, but there were probably some 12th century introductions as well as improvements to earlier defences.
Approches métholodogiques d'un recensement général des fortifications de terre médiévales en France Methodological approach for a general survey of medieval earthen fortifications in France
Jean-Marie Pesez
79 - 90
St Briavels Castle
Peter E Curnow
E A Johnson
91 - 114
Describes the keep, curtain, demolished buildings in the bailey, the domestic range, and the Edwardian gatehouse of 1292-3. The motte is unexplored; the tower keep is of Henry II, the curtain is c 1200.
Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
H Gordon Slade
151 - 166
Mid-13th century remains are embedded in later works, ie a simple quadrangle with corner towers and small forward gatehouse; heightened in 14th and again in 16th, with a new range. Alterations continued into 19th century.
Dolforwyn Castle, Powys, Wales: excavations 1981-4
Lawrence A S Butler
167 - 177
Built 1273-4. The SW end was explored: square tower with numerous phases of internal subdivision and repair. In the courtyard are wall footings of half-timbered buildings and steps. Captured by the English in 1277, it was kept in repair for another century. Its N Welsh context is explained.
Recent research on medieval moated sites in England
Alan Aberg
185 - 197
Brief account of the work of the Moated Sites Research Group and comment on a few sites: we still await total excavation of a large, complex site.
Mottes in the Netherlands
Jan C Besteman
211 - 224
Problems of definition: many have been levelled. Friesland and Zealand regionalism is evident, and mottes are absent from the northern half of the Netherlands. Starting in mid to later 12th century as military and administrative centres, they were still being built into 14th century.
