[TF 116774]. The manor site was first occupied by three successive RB round houses (AD 50-200), then crossed by an 8th-century road bordered by two contiguous homesteads. A long series of buildings and rebuildings followed, including boat-shaped hall, bower, kitchen, building of a bank and ditch and subsequent extension of this, the changing of the hall site etc. A wood-and-stone revetted motte with oblong tower basement was added, and the hall rebuilt twice more before being moved elsewhere. [TF 819151]. The original (c 1080) two-storey double hall had ground-floor windows and entrance. A gate-tower was added to a low defensive bank, which was heightened and topped by a curtain wall. The hall door and windows were blocked, the ground floor infilled and the walls thickened. The space between hall and curtain was filled in with material from the recut moat, and a new shell-wall was built on top. Finally the gate was partly (and hurriedly) blocked, and the smaller hall of the pair demolished, probably in mid-12th century. D F R

[TF 025700]. The historical background is outlined. The hall (built partly over the bailey ditch) was at first square (four piers within) and then had a solar and cellar attached. The hall was then narrowed, resited, and extended in turn over the cellar, and a courtyard added. A late Saxon V-section ditch was found with ovens and a Stamford ware pottery kiln. Nearby was another house with a solar and drying-kilns. D F R
