Abstract:
The first of a series of studies to assist English Heritage in allocating resources, this volume reports a rapid survey of achievements in RB pottery studies over the last 20 years. Recommendations for future policy include the preparation of explicit research designs for all ceramic projects, setting an appropriate level of analysis and recording, achieving consistency in quantification, establishing national and local reference collections, publishing manuals and corpora for certain types of pottery, and emphasizing the training and support of pottery staff. A leitmotiv of the report is the general inappropriateness of the current system of project funding for the proper pursuit of pottery studies. CL
