The ware was widely but thinly distributed in Brittany and Southern England as part of a commerce from Aquitaine which included wine and (probably) perishable goods. In Britain the 110+ examples date from the last quarter of 3rd century to the end of 4th/beginning of 5th, in an essentially urban and coastal distribution differing from that of Argonne and Eifel wares. The trade route was already ancient (Bronze Age) and continued into medieval times (Saintonge wares). Petrological analysis of a London sherd suggests Aquitaine as the most likely source (and rules out the Rhineland).
