Abstract: |
Excavations (including work by S E Rigold) were directed at the uncovering and display of the S side of the abbey church, elucidating the AS and med phases. A rubbish dump for Durovernum c 5 BC to AD 375 was found, but no evidence for 5th-6th century occupation. For the Saxon period there was a Christian cemetery, architectural fragments from the church, and foundations of the West Tower. The Romanesque sequence was elucidated (work of Abbots Scotland and Wido) and also later med to post-Dissolution phases. Some 12,000 sherds, Belgic to postmed, were recovered. The site is important as the birthplace of Christianity in England, with its four separate churches on a single E-W line; and the phased construction of the W end of the first Norman church has now been explained. |
