Abstract: |
The work is based on a 1982 thesis with minor amendments to 1985. Chapters treat objectives, problems and methods, the Late Iron Age background, pottery of the Roman period in Kent (AD 43 into early 5th century), history of pottery production in Kent, aspects of its organization, and conclusions. Appendices treat fabrics, corpora, sources of pottery, quantification tables. The trade networks were complex and could change gradually or abruptly. There is fairly steady parallelism with Essex developments. Kent occupied an important position between the Continent and the rest of Britain, and it seems that the pottery movements reflected broader trade networks. Possibilities for further study include precise definition of fabric groups, further quantification of material, etc. |
