Abstract: |
W F Grimes sets the archaeological background to the imported marbles and silverwork of 2nd to 4th century and the loeal stone works. The results of XRF and metallographic analysis of the casket and strainer are presented by M J Hughes and J R S Lang, while S E Ellis reports on the thin sections of the stones. The range of subjects of the sculptures indicates competing religions as well as Roman Mithraism's syncretistic character. |
