Abstract: |
Excavation confirmed the existence of a Roman riverside wall, constructed c mid to late 4th century using a number of sculptured stone blocks, from a late 2nd/early 3rd century monumental arch and a screen, both with figures of gods, which are reconstructed and discussed. The erosion which FitzStephen said destroyed the wall in 12th century was demonstrated, but there had also been deliberate demolition, perhaps in late 12th. Specialist reports: environmental evidence and dendrochronology, Roman to post-medieval pottery, other finds, and the sculptured stones. D G |
