Abstract
Editor's introduction to Tintagel Papers
Charles Charles Thomas
7 - 8
Although recent research has excluded the possibility of a Celtic monastery at Tintagel, and denied the Arthurian connexions, much material of equal interest is now available, running from late Roman to postmedieval times. See abstracts 89/1134, 1579, 1592-3, 1630-1, 1693-4 and 1786 for details of this new material.
Excavations in the lower ward, Tintagel Castle, 1986
Steve Hartgroves
Rick Walker
9 - 30
Three small trenches showed that the Castle was constructed by enclosing a sloping promontory with a substantial wall, and that internal floor levels had been made up. Evidence of intensive post-Roman occupation was also found (6th century imported pottery, etc). A complex clay oven of Roman type had five successive floor levels, and there were many stake-holes of post-Roman wooden structures. 14C and archaeomagnetic dates were obtained. Au(adp)
Minor sites at Tintagel Island
Charles Charles Thomas
31 - 48
Records investigations of the island's water supply, a small ?16th century building, a detached 13th century larder (the Tunnel), some forgotten 'Arthurian' features noted in early guidebooks (of which 'King Arthur's Footprint' may be a genuine and significant relic of antiquity), and possible post-Roman use of the landing-place below the Iron Gate. The 1988 CAU excavations at Tintagel Island: discoveries and their implications
Charles Charles Thomas
49 - 60
A section immediately north of the hall in the inner ward, taken with other evidence, suggests that a major post-Roman focus of settlement underlies the inner ward. Au (abr)
Tintagel in the 12th and 13th centuries
Oliver J Padel
61 - 66
Presents evidence against the widely-repeated conjecture that Reginald, earl of Cornwall, built the castle in mid-12th century: the correct date is probably about 1230 and the builder Richard, earl of Cornwall, brother of Henry III (see also 89/1693).
Medieval pottery from Tintagel: a summary
C O'Mahoney
67 - 68
Examination of the pottery upholds the idea, based on historical evidence, that the Castle was not built until the 1230s (see also 89/1694, 1786). Au (abr)
Incised pictorial slates from Tintagel
Carl M Thorpe
69 - 78
New and accurate drawings are provided of ten pieces of slate with incised designs found mostly during the 1933-8 excavations. Details of the drawing method are given. Designs include gaming-boards, scenes, and motifs, for which dating is not yet attempted. Many more examples may remain to be found on the island.
The archaeology of Tintagel Parish churchyard
Charles Charles Thomas
79 - 91
Reports various discoveries from the churchyard on high cliffs opposite Tintagel Island. Long-cist burials occur within and near the churchyard, which overlies part of an embanked enclosure. Of eight small mounds, one opened in 1942 disclosed an unusual cist, apparently stratified above long cists. Provisional interpretation: 'diffuse' early Christian cemetery from late 5th century, enclosure with mounds for 'speciai graves' from 6th (?for several centuries), and building of parish church in early 12th (see also 89/1591, 89/1631). Tintagel parish churchyard: geophysical (magnetometer) survey 1988
Rick Walker
93 - 96
Four twenty-metre-square areas in two fields N and NE of the church were surveyed at one-metre intervals. Numerous linear anomalies were found; most are probably associated with geological features, and some with strip fields. The boundary of a 'noisy' area close to the church did not match well with any visible earthworks. Resistivity and phosphate surveys might be more productive. Au(adp)
