Abstract
A study of the weathering behaviour of medieval glass from York Minster

Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis was used to determine the chemical composition of 250 pieces of glass from York Minster and of some comparative material. It was found that pitting is only a less severe form of crusting, so the two phenomena are not distinct; nor are they climate-related. Provided the 'SiO2' content exceeds 60%, medieval glasses do not weather noticeably in 500-800 years. Some deductions on origin of materials used can sometimes be made.
