Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on ground reduction prior to the construction of new stables and a holding yard covering 325 square metres to the west of Edwins Hall, Edwins Hall Road, Woodham Ferrers, Essex. The groundworks comprised reduction of between 0.5 and 0.1m of topsoil, a dark grey, sandy (clay-silt) containing small gravels and occasional fragments of brick and tile. Excavation revealed a patchy horizon comprising the underlying subsoil and remnant topsoil. Over half the site appears to have been affected by truncation from modern features or disturbance through extensive rooting from nearby trees. Generally, excavation was of insufficient depth to remove these roots. The subsoil appeared to be a well mixed layer of re-deposited natural clay that may have represented the up-cast from the excavation of the moats during the 13th or 14th century. Over-machining in the north-east corner of the development revealed that the underlying subsoil was approximately 0.25m in depth and overlay head deposits of clay. There was no evidence for a sealed ground surface beneath the up-cast. This could suggest that the area was cleared of topsoil and vegetation prior to excavation of the moats. Truncating both the topsoil and subsoil was a modern service trench and what may have been a backfilled void left by removal of a water storage or sceptic tank.
