Abstract:
Evaluation work In July 2002 by the Norfolk Archaeological Unit at 6-12 St Andrews Street, Norwich revealed a 16th-century vault or undercroft with an associated cellar. Based on the results of this work, Norfolk Landscape Archaeology requested further evaluation in order to record the full extent of the cellar, and to locate, record and characterise other structures present on the site. The aim was to inform the planning process in regard to the proposed redevelopment of the site. The Norfolk Archaeological Unit undertook this second evaluation in July 2003, excavating a further two trenches. Trench 3 measured 20m by 5m in plan and was located at the north of the site, parallel with the St Andrew''s Street frontage. Trench 4 measured 8m by 6m in plan, and was located along the western boundary of the site. In Trench 3 the surviving extent of the 16th-century vault or undercroft and cellar was located and planned. In addition, further cellars and structures were recorded. The most significant of these were a partially destroyed vaulted structure of potential 17th-century date, and a possible chimney-stack of 16th-to-17th century date. In Trench 4 the location of a 18th- to 19th-century cellar was recorded. Other structures of apparent post 18th-century date were also revealed and recorded by the evaluation.
