Abstract:
An Archaeological Watching Brief was carried out at Aston Hall, In July 2006 by Birmingham Archaeology. Work was commissioned by Birmingham City Council and Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, and consisted of two machine-dug trial trenches and two hand-dug test pits in a car parking area to the south of the hall. Investigation was aimed at obtaining information regarding the provenance and construction history of the south and east retaining walls of the former privy gardens in order to inform design proposals for their reinstatement. Excavation revealed several phases of modification to the walls, with the most recent contemporary with the construction of the car park at some point in the late 20th century. Original lower courses of the wall were laid in English Garden Wall Bond, and built off sandstone foundations, similar to designs seen in the hall and parts of the northern service range (previously investigated). The wall was subsequently underpinned and strengthened with concrete foundations.
