Abstract:
In June and August 2006 Archaeological Solutions Limited (AS) conducted archaeological monitoring of land north of School Road, Saxon Street, Woodditton, Cambridgeshire. The monitoring followed a trial trench evaluation (Woolhouse et al 2006) which had revealed prehistoric features within the line of the proposed road infrastructure for a new stud farm. The monitoring and recording identified 13 features, consisting of seven linear features, four pits, a dewpond and a posthole in five areas (Areas A-E). The features produced a small assemblage of pottery dating from the early Bronze Age through to the late Iron Age. The remains provide evidence for small scale human activity which increased in intensity in the late Iron Age. The dewpond may have been used for watering live stock and the linear features are likely ditches associated with fields/enclosures. Thus, the area may have been used for pastoral farming in the prehistoric period, although evidence for arable activity may be identified in the environmental samples. One undated ditch was recorded parallel to the Icknield Way and it is likely the same as shown in cartographic sources, although it may also be of a later date. Three pits contained burnt remains which probably represent the dumping of material from an oven or a hearth, although no further evidence for cooking or industrial activity was identified. The limited finds assemblage and the lack of building materials recovered suggest the principal settlement site lay some distance away.
