Abstract: |
The geophysical data provided considerable help in locating areas of archaeological potential. The interpretation of the data suggested that industrial and settlement features are likely to be present within the survey areas. While one of the trenches found only modern ferrous material, the other trenches based on the geophysical data were very productive. A kiln, ditches / pits, significant numbers of iron artefacts and a previous shoreline were all revealed as a result of the gradiometer and resistance surveys. Gradiometer survey also indicated a large area of likely settlement next to the present village. The seismic refraction survey has successfully identified two channels which correspond well with borehole data in the area. The results show what appears to be the interface between the sediments and the bedrock. Finer detail such re-cut channels was beyond the resolution of the technique. |
