Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation at The Custard Factory, Gibb Street, Digbeth, Birmingham identified four phases of activity. The earliest, Phase 1, dated to the 13-14th century when a number of occupation layers built up and ten postholes and one gully were cut in the eastern half of the site. Phase 2 was characterised by the cutting of six substantial pits in the southern one-third of the site during the late 17th-mid 18th century. Phase 3 is dated to the 18th century and is represented by five tanning pits, three wells and two small pits belonging to a documented tannery and associated bark mill. |
