Abstract: |
In September 2008, Birmingham archaeology carried out an excavation on behalf of University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust in advance of proposed development at Boiler House Drive, Metchley Roman fort, Birmingham. Two trenches were excavated, with sondages dug in both to a maximum of 4m below ground level. The natural subsoil was not encountered in either of the trenches, and it appears that the entire area had been built-upon prior to the construction of the surrounding buildings. It is possible that this build-up was associated with either the construction of the Birmingham to Worcester Canal between 1791 and 1815, or the railway in the early 19th century, both of which are located directly to the east of the site. No features, or possible features of archaeological interest were identified, and no finds were collected. |
