Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted in 2007 by Archaeology South East at Haslemere Primary School, Haslemere Avenue, Mitcham. Site code HZF07. Two trenches were excavated to assess the archaeological remains. the natural was overlain by a homogeneous dump of modern construction/demolition rubble which was sealed by a terramatting cover prior to the construction of the existing car park. On feature of interest was observed in trench 1 and consisted of a fragment of a late 19th or early 20th century brick surface, possibly representing that of a coal room. This was truncated by modern services and buried under the modern rubble. No archaeological features were seen to cut into the natural. Hydrocarbon contamination was present in both trenches. The contractor concluded that any surviving archaeological remains could be heavily truncated and/or contaminated. *natural river terrace gravels and clays at max of 15.72m OD in the south falling to 15.26m OD in the north* |
