Abstract:
During October and November 2006, Archaeological Solutions Ltd carried out an archaeological excavation on land at The Chalet Site, Hall Road, Heybridge, Essex (NGR TL 8600 0740). The project was commissioned by Redrow Homes in response to a planning condition applied to the development of 124 homes. The excavation followed a trial trench evaluation (McConnell et al. 2006). The excavation revealed a multi-phase landscape with four main periods of activity. Phase 1 dated to the late Neolithic - early Bronze Age and consisted of two isolated pits containing Grooved Ware/ beaker pottery. Phase 2 comprised an Iron Age enclosure on the edge of the Blackwater Estuary, with contemporary features within its interior and to its exterior but with no clear definition as to the character of the activity that they represented though two urned cremations were present. Phase 3 activity is characterised by an Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery with urned and un-urned cremations and a single possible grave. Cremation burials were clustered around a striking zigzag of linear features linking circular and penannular enclosures, though this set of features were intercutting and not immediately contemporary with one another. The layout of these features may have been intended to respect the Iron Age enclosure and it seems possible that this site was chosen as cemetery location because of the presence of the earlier activity here. Phase 4 comprised a series of ditches and isolated pits representing post-medieval/early modern agricultural activity.
