Abstract:
Monitoring of topsoil stripping identified part of a medieval farmstead and field boundaries at the current northern limit of the quarry. Two ditched enclosures were recorded, with evidence of timber buildings in the easternmost, which is interpreted as the farmstead, and pits and a pond in the westernmost, interpreted as a farmyard. The medieval site was planned and a selection of the enclosure ditches and the internal features weer excavated to evaluate it before further area excavation. The evaluation recovered pottery dated to the 12th-13th centuries and silver short-cross penny of Stephen, dated to 1137-1153. Later prehistoric pits and post-holes were rexcavated in the west of the area; one pit is dated to the Late Neolthic and another to the Early Bronze Age. A post-medieval pit and field boundaries were also recorded.
