Abstract: |
A targeted archaeological field evaluation was undertaken in advance of proposed aggregates extraction. The results of an earlier desk-based assessment had indicated that the potential for sub-surface archaeological remains dating to the prehistoric period was extremely high, with flint findspots and numerous cropmark features located across the proposed extraction area representing the multi-phase remains of fields, settlement foci and possibly ritual sites. The field evaluation consisted of the excavation of a single linear trial trench measuring 64m long and positioned to adequately sample the site of a square enclosure identified by aerial photography. No evidence of the enclosure was found however, although an undated pit was discovered in a highly plough-damaged area which perhaps accounted for the lack of other surviving remains. |
