Abstract:
Field-walking, metal detecting and trial trenching was carried out prior to construction of a new school and extension of an existing school. 46 trenches were excavated, representing 5.5% of the development. The evaluation revealed evidence for prehistoric and post-medieval activity. A curvilinear ditch probably represents part of an enclosure of Bronze Age / Earlier Iron Age date. It produced a small quantity of domestic refuse that suggests occupation, although evidence for this was not identified. A circular enclosure in the central site produced moderate amounts of Earlier to Middle Iron Age pottery and some residual Bronze Age pottery. Other finds include bone, a flint blade and charred cereal grains. The double-ditched enclosure might have been a barrow or a temple/shrine. Two pits adjacent to the double enclosure are undated but assumed to be contemporary with it. They contained a large amount of heat-altered stone that was derived presumably from activities that took place inside the enclosure. A third pit, located 10m southwest of the enclosure, contained Earlier to Middle Iron Age pottery similar to that from one of the enclosure ditches. A linear ditch was located just to the east of the double-ditched enclosure. The ditch is undated but likely to be prehistoric. It might have a boundary ditch. Five undated pits in the centre of the site might be prehistoric. There were three post-medieval ditches. One of these is clearly on the line of the parish boundary and another is aligned with a footpath on the c.1880 OS map.
