Abstract: |
Prior to development of a large area of land adjacent to Hindpool Road in Barrow-in-Furness a desk-based assessment was carried out to establish the presence of any remains of archaeological significance. The site lies on the edge of the original settlement at Barrow, and forms part of the organised development of the town in the late 19th century. The first shipyard in Barrow, established by the William Ashburner in 1847, was situated on the edge of the site. The area was developed into part of the dock complex in the 1860s and went on to house a number of industrial activities including a rope walk, steam corn mill, gas works and iron and brass foundry. Several buildings forming part of the foundry were revealed to be still present on the site, and further work including building recording and evaluation was recommended. |
