Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in December 2008 at Rackhams Cirencester, Market Place, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Three trenches were excavated. The earliest deposit encountered was 'dark earth' identified in trench 3 (along The Waterloo frontage) at approximately 0.80m below present ground level (110.24m AOD). The deposit contained late medieval pottery and tile and was sealed by a post-medieval demolition deposit. The latter was overlain by a cobbled surface, probably representing a former yard or street, within which a post setting and possible beam slot were observed. Within the two trenches excavated adjacent to the churchyard, demolition deposits, containing 17th/18th-century artefacts, overlain by modern topsoil were identifiedcontaining 17th/18th-century artefacts, overlain by modern topsoil. |
