Abstract: |
In April 2007 NAU Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of a former bowling green at Littles Crescent, Ipswich, prior to the construction of five houses with associated car parking and vehicular access. The work showed that, prior to the construction of the bowling green, the site had been steeply sloping. To level off this slope the south east corner of the site had been truncated and significant quantities of material laid down elsewhere. Apart from a small quantity of pottery recovered from a subsoil deposit surviving in the northern part of the site, no evidence relating to early activity on the site was recovered. This appears to confirm the impression given by the first maps of the area that, during the medieval period and probably the preceeding Saxon period, the site lay within open, undeveloped ground. |
