Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of three machine-excavated trenches, was undertaken by AC archaeology on land adjacent to St Andrew's parish church, Cullompton, Devon. The trenching was the first stage in a programme of archaeological works as a condition of planning permission for the construction of a new community centre. The site is located within the historic core of the town, in an area where maps of 1633 and 1841 show structures present at these times. While archaeological features, deposits and structural evidence were present in all trenches, these remains appear to date to the period c. 1750 - 1850. Other than a few sherds of 16th and 17th century pottery, no earlier evidence for occupation was identified. |
