Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained between 19th February 2007 to the 8th November 2007 during the construction of a new business and shopping centre with associated underground car parking (planning reference; HS/FA/06/00307) at The Gap Site, Hastings, East Sussex (NGR 581543 109485). A total of 27 site visits were made over this period (planning reference; HS/FA/05/0064). Clay deposits (Contexts 2, 8 and 9) were encountered beneath Victorian made ground. These clay deposits were likely formed during the infilling of the Old Haven channel during the 14th Century. The clay deposits seem to cut through earlier peat deposits (Contexts 1 and 7). Remains of a dog were discovered within context 9 during the excavation for a foul drain. The samples taken from the clay and peat deposits revealed no environmental remains. No other artefacts or ecofacts were recovered at the development site. A confidence rating is high that the best possible results were achieved. |
