Abstract: |
Archaeological recording at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter was undertaken by Exeter Archaeology between June 2008 and October 2009, prior to and during redevelopment of the site. The work comprised building recording, the controlled archaeological excavation of two lift shafts, and a watching brief on groundworks. During the development, elements of the rampart of the defences of the Roman civil town, and of the outer bailey defences of the Norman Castle, were exposed. The latter were found to cut and overly two Roman quarry pits dating to the 3rd century AD. This is significant as they represent the first excavated evidence of Roman quarrying in the immediate vicinity of Rougemont, an outcrop of volcanic basalt and trap. Monitoring of alterations to the museum building and recording of previously unidentified or unrecorded historic architectural fabric was also undertaken. A watching brief on groundworks to the west and north of the new building revealed no significant new exposures of building fabric associated with Bradninch Place or deposits associated with earlier Roman or medieval activity. |
