Abstract: |
John Moore Heritage Services conducted an archaeological evaluation of the proposed development site, from 19thJuly until 28th August 2007. Fifty-eight trenches, totalling approximately 1750 metres in length, were excavated to reveal the underlying natural geology. Numerous undated ditches, pits and postholes were recorded across the site, and there would appear to be at least three phases of activity, but probably more although these may be sub-phases. Prehistoric activity is represented by two Neolithic to Bronze Age ditches and a sparse scatter of flint. Remnants of a possible Roman field system adjacent to the line of the Roman road were recorded. Other ditches probably associated with medieval and later field systems were also excavated including some features that appear to correspond to a boundary marked on the 1840's Tithe Map. |
